Last year, the Consumer Product Safety Commission cautioned against the use of fire retardant chemicals in baby products and furniture. Currently flame retardant chemicals are still being used in almost all juvenile products and furniture containing polyurethane foam (the spongy foam inside high chairs, strollers, nursing pillows, changing tables, and portable car seats).

Did you know?
Scientists around the world have linked certain chemicals, most commonly used as flame retardants, to a host of health disorders.
Currently California infant products have the highest levels of flame retardants in the world.

Interestingly

According to state and federal agencies, baby products do not pose a great danger of fire hazards.

Healthy Child believes such harsh chemicals should not be used as a preventative measure.
Take Action Today!

Californians, tell your Senators to support SB 772 because toxic flame retardants shouldn't be in babies' products.

Re: SB 772 - SUPPORT

Dear Senator Leno,

I am writing on behalf of the citizens of California to register our strong support of Senate Bill 772. This legislation will end the requirement that juvenile products contain toxic fire retardant chemicals, unless the Bureau of Home Furnishings determines that such products represent a fire safety risk. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there is no evidence that juvenile products are associated with the risk of fire.
Halogenated flame retardants commonly used in juvenile products are linked to numerous public health concerns, including cancer, neurological and reproductive impairments, birth defects, thyroid disruption, hearing deficits, and learning disorders such as ADHD. Many halogenated flame retardants are persistent, accumulate up the food chain, and are now found at increasing levels in people and wildlife. Developing fetuses and young children are the most vulnerable. Prohibiting the use of these chemicals in baby products will protect the health of our children, the general public, and the environment.

For these and other reasons, we strongly support SB 772 and urge you, your legislative colleagues and Governor Schwarzenegger to support this important legislation.
Sincerely,
